We liked the fact that the Shift keys are extra-long, and that, in general, the keys had excellent feedback, no perceptible wobble and a generous amount of travel. But cellular connectivity is just so convenient. The EliteBook x360 1030 G3 convertible was of this year as a direct successor to last year's successful EliteBook x360 1030 G2. There are also plenty of ports, and all this adds up to make for an excellent overall laptop. Yes, I know that public Wi-Fi is available in many places.
For calls, there are outbound- and inbound-noise cancellation and microphone optimizations for single voice or conferences. There is even a two-factor authentication where your phone must be physically present near the laptop before you can unlock it. While it works well enough in low light, the overall quality is not inspiring. In comparison, all tested devices range from 0. Ultimately, you'll be able to play simple games like Minecraft, Fortnite, or Candy Crush, but not much else without dialing down settings and resolutions to the barest minimums. It's probably the closest to feeling like I'm writing on paper that I've seen.
And then presentation mode is when the keyboard is facing down and the display is facing up. Perhaps unsurprisingly, overall results are not unlike what we've measured on the latest. The user clicks a single button F2 to enable the technology, which creates an instant white-out effect for onlookers. Besides the added cost, I can think of no reason not to want such a feature in a high-end laptop. As you can see, the Work test is where the EliteBook really shines.
Unfortunately, It is latched extremely tightly around the edges and corners and it's easy to damage the system even with a sharp edge. It's similar to Dell's Mobile Connect; however, PhoneWise has an awesome feature for iPhones. When you're at work, you probably won't use SureView much, but it becomes more handy when you're working remotely on a flight or from a coffee shop. Alas, it doesn't necessarily mean a quieter laptop: I noticed the fans noisily spooling up every time I restarted the machine. Even if you don't use it 99% of the time, it's nice to have when you do use it.
Beware, though, that high-end variants of the Elitebook x360 1040 G5 are very expensive. Regardless of the discrepancy, our unit performed smoothly and with no software hitches. Despite being all metal, the EliteBook seems to do a better job at thermals than its Spectre x360 consumer sibling. The bezels are 50 percent and 39 percent thinner along the side edges and bottom edge, respectively, while keeping most of the original chassis characteristics intact. The version of the EliteBook x360 1040 G5 I'm reviewing includes a gorgeous touch display with a matte finish to reduce glare.
On the back, there are two three-edged hinges that are carved outward and between them is a neatly placed EliteBook logo. As usual with EliteBooks, there are buttons for answering and ending video calls on the Fn key row. Both fans will idle when under low loads like word processing or emailing.
The system has a much smaller footprint compared to the 1030 G2 due to the narrower bezels even though the new model is actually slightly thicker by almost a millimeter. This ability is user configurable and lets the user quickly launch any predefined app they want. Pushing down on the palm rests or keyboard center results in almost no flexing. As with the previous version, it's generously sized and quite responsive even without customizing sensitivity settings. The hinges are uniformly firm at all angles with no teetering. Sure Click works on the browser side, protecting you from malware on the internet.
